The "Physicians Needed" categories are based on all ambulatory settings [private offices, hospitals and freestanding facilities]. Current Physicians Needed reflects the current insurance coverage distribution of the United States, while HMO Physicians Needed assumes the entire population is enrolled in HMO's. Total physicians needed is calculated by dividing the total visit demand by the median productivity for each specialty and dividing the result into the entire 1999 population of the United States. Physician Supply per 100,000 population includes only direct patient care physicians in private offices and hospitals.
